A computer system that controls Oldsmar’s water supply was hacked in an apparent attack.
The system which regulates the number of chemicals that are injected into the water supply was hacked around 1:30 pm on Friday.
A worker who was watching his screen at a remote location noticed his curser moving on the screen and quickly reversed the hacker’s actions.
The hacker attempted to add 100 times the EPA legal level of sodium hydroxide (lye) into the water.
“At no time was there a significant adverse effect on the water being treated,” the county sheriff said in a statement. “Importantly, the public was never in danger.”
