BALI (INTELLIHUB) — A drunk passenger tried to break into the cockpit of a Virgin Australia plane which was flying from Brisbane to the Indonesian resort island of Bali.
The incident created a hijacking scare and alerted military agents on the ground who assembled to prepare for the airplane to land.
“There was a drunk passenger, intoxicated and aggressively behaved. He was trying to enter the cockpit, banging the door but he did not enter the cockpit,” Heru Sudjatmiko, an airport manager, told Indonesia’s Metro TV.
The incident may have just been a random outburst, police are still unsure whether the act was premeditated.
“The police are having difficulty digging up information on what he intended to do because he is still in an unstable condition,” a police officer at Bali airport told members of the media.
Palani Mohan, a passenger on a flight that was about to take off from the airport in Bali, said that “The captain of my plane made an announcement saying we were delayed indefinitely. He said it was because a hijack was going on in Bali airport, about 150 metres away from us.”
“I saw at least five vehicles including military-style trucks, filled with men in uniform, rushing towards the plane. Then the Virgin plane taxied away, followed by the convoy of security forces. The flight attendant said it’s been taken off to a different part of the airport,” he said.
“Bali airport seems to be in lockdown, we’ve been told no planes will be departing or arriving. The pilot’s not allowing anyone off our plane.” he added.
All 139 passengers are safe and have been evacuated from the aircraft. The attempted hijacker, 28-year-old Australian Matt Christopher Lockley is now in police custody.
