Arecibo director Francisco Cordova told members of the press on 14 Aug that 250 of the primary reflector dish panels were damaged when a cable unexpectedly snapped during the elusive hunt for a dangerous near-earth object.

The 56-year-old telescope will now remain closed indefinitely until repairs are completed and all systems are back up and online.

The cable that snapped was supposed to last at least another 15 to 20 years and appears to have been fused at the break by an extreme source of heat or energy.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident which left no one injured.
