Bradley Manning’s lawyer recently told supporters that Manning has hopes of running for public office once his ordeal with the legal system and the federal government is behind him.
While I am not a supporter of the political system or the job of “politician” this is positive news for many reasons.
First it shows that even after years of torture, solitary confinement and constant abuse from his captors he is in good enough spirits to where he can be optimistic about his case and his future.
Additionally it shows that Manning is planning on taking an antiwar message to various public platforms when he is able to free himself from the dungeons of the state.
“If he doesn’t spend the rest of his life in prison, Pfc. Bradley Manning wants go to college and perhaps run for public office, his lawyer, David E. Coombs, told supporters of the former Army intelligence analyst.
Manning is accused of illegally giving hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables and classified reports about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the website WikiLeaks. He faces 22 criminal charges and could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
“He’s confident things will turn out OK for him,” Coombs said Monday, standing in a wooden pulpit in the All Souls Church Unitarian, in front of two large posters printed with Manning’s photograph and the words “Free Bradley.”
Coombs described Manning, 24, as “very encouraged” by the way the pretrial hearings in his case are going. The trial is tentatively scheduled to start in March. Coombs said he speaks on the phone with Manning every week, and described him as “one of the most intelligent people I have ever met.”
Manning is a soldier who saw the corruption in the Middle Eastern conflict first hand and did what he knew was right for humanity.
Fearing that more rogue soldiers would divulge their secrets, the US military wanted to intimidate any future whistleblowers from surfacing so they made an example out of him.
As of right now the outcome of the trial is impossible to predict with Manning’s life hanging in the balance.
