Canada designates Proud Boys, 12 other groups as terrorists

Canadian officials aren't playing around when it comes to violence. But we may still need to question who is actually sponsoring it.

Canadian authorities have declared the Proud Boys and 12 other groups terror-based entities.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said in a press conference on Wednesday: “Their violent actions and rhetoric are fueled by white supremacy, anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and misogyny, and unfortunately, often in a combination of all of the above.”

The move allows authorities to seize the financial assets of anyone connected to the newly designated groups.

“What I can tell you is over the past several months, basically since 2018, we have seen an escalation and there is an escalation towards violence for this group,” Blair said about the Proud Boys. “In the aftermath of the US presidential election, we’ve seen an escalation in supports that signal an escalation towards violence in a number of different groups, including the Proud Boys.”
