UKRAINE (INTELLIHUB) —I was careful to double and triple check this story to make sure that it wasn’t an April fool’s joke.  Oddly, it seems that this actually happened.

A man who travels with an entourage of storm troopers and appears in public dressed as Darth Vader has recently ran for president of Ukraine.  During a live press conference held recently, he told the party’s congress that he wanted to turn Ukraine into “a galactic empire”.

Earlier today, it was reported that Darth Vader’s bid for presidency was rejected by Ukrainian officials.

The country’s Central Electoral Commission says parts of Darth Vader’s application were “questionable” and some paperwork was probably forged. Apparently, the man is really an electrician called Viktor Shevchenko, who changed his name to Darth Vader in March, BBC reported.

The elaborate set up and costumes were not the only expensive part of the presidential run, apparently the application itself was hundreds of thousands of dollars. “It may seem like an innocent joke, but someone paid 2.5m hryvnyas ($227,000) for this joke,” said one Central Electoral Commission member, Ihor Zhydenko, speaking of the deposit that must be given along with the application.
