(INTELLIHUB) — The people who run governments and create giant armies are truly insane, but no one on this earth should associate the actions of these tyrants with the human beings that they extort, oppress and manipulate.
The president of the United States does not represent the average American, in fact their needs and desires are typical diametrically opposed.
Likewise, the governments of Iran or North Korea are not a fair representation of the people who happen to live within that geographical area.
During the cold war people of various countries were able to reach out to one another through art, sports or other forms of entertainment.
Although sports, entertainment, and even art can become a distraction and an escape when taken to an excess, it still offers a great avenue through which people who are living under different tyrants can interact with one another and recognize each others humanity.
Just this week basketball star Dennis Rodman arrived in North Korea with members of the Harlem Globetrotters to host a basketball camp for local children.
“Rodman has traveled to Pyongyang along with three Harlem Globetrotters and a documentary film crew for some basketball exhibitions and, the film company hopes, an audience with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who is said to be a devoted basketball fan.
The group landed in Pyongyang on Tuesday, giving a round of interviews to journalists at the airport.
“We got invited and we just came over to have some fun,” Rodman said. “Hopefully, everything will be O.K. and the kids will have a good time with the games.”
In times of war the governments involved are always working to dehumanize the people who belong to the countries that they are not formally aligned with.
This is the only way that the general population would agree to support the mass murder of large groups of people.
While this may seem like your typical worthless celebrity story at face value, art, sports and entertainment can be very effective ways of connecting with people who are on opposing ends of conflicts that neither of them truly want.
