(INTELLIHUB) — Phoenix Express 2016 is an exercise “sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and facilitated by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, is designed to improve regional cooperation, increase maritime domain awareness information-sharing practices, and operational capabilities to enhance efforts to achieve safety and security in the Mediterranean Sea,” according to official documents.
The participants are, “Algeria, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States. NATO Shipping Center is also scheduled to participate.”
Areas of focus for the exercise are “the globally-recognized Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI)” which officials say “will allow endorsing nations of Tunisia and Morocco to develop capabilities to detect and disrupt the delivery of materials used to build and develop weapons of mass destruction.”
Phoenix Express 2016, which began May 17th, was being conducted in the exact same place the downed EgyptAir flight crossed into the military’s ‘no fly’ zone and is now a topic of focus for researchers and journalists interested in the missing plane.
It may also be worthy to note that “Egypt was not invited” to participate in the exercise, as pointed out by Youtuber DAHB007.
“Israel — their air force had control of all of this starting June 18th,” and the exercises are not planned to end until June 6th.
The location of the drill is “the exact area” where the plane went over the sea,” DAHB007 said.
