OAHU (INTELLIHUB) — “Limestone is a porous rock that easily dissolves in water”, said local KHON2 reporter Marisa Yamane, after interviewing Prof. Steve Martel from the University of Hawaii’s Dept. of Geology and Geophysics.

The report documents how sinkholes can happen in Hawaii due to the fact that the Hawaiian islands contain limestone. In fact, homes built in the “Ewa” area contain limestone under their foundations Martel explained.

In a bizarre case, a Florida man was recently swallowed up by a sinkhole, along with all of the contents in his bedroom. Martel responded, explaining that Florida is at far more risk of developing sinkholes than Hawaii.

Hawaii News Now reported, “A white minivan fell into a sinkhole in Windward Oahu on Thursday night, not long after a separate sinkhole was reported on Ala Lilikoi Street in front of Salt Lake Elementary in Honolulu.

Photographs from the scene showed the rear tire of a minivan stuck inside the road on Aloha Oe Place in Maunawili. Hawaii News Now was told that a water main break may have been to blame for the incident. […] Earlier on Thursday, another sinkhole was reported in the area fronting Salt Lake Elementary, and road repairs may have an impact on traffic in the area as parents seek to drop their children off at school.[1]

Other sinkholes have also been recently reported in Hawaii raising the eyebrows of some.
