Robots to have babies who may colonize Mars

This technology opens new perspectives for robotics and AI

(INTELLIHUB) — On May 26, the first robot baby was “born”.

Researchers and scientists have now made it possible for robots to have sex and pass along their DNA to their offspring. If the offspring is deemed satisfactory, the child then becomes an adult, and possibly, a parent.

The “Robot Baby Project” let’s robots evolve by sending their genomes through wifi to mate. In the future, these bots may be used in unknown environments that could be hazardous to humans. One such future aspiration is to have them colonize the moon.

Guszti Eiben, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at VU says,

‘What does it all mean? It means a proof of concept […] And the concept we prove is the evolution of robots and physical hardware. For science this means that artificial evolution can break out of computer simulations and enter the real world.’

Over time they will evolve and develop a more suitable body, depending on where they are adapting to.
