Statue of Liberty-sized asteroid to fly by Earth on Saturday

(INTELLIHUB) — An asteroid nearly as large as the Statue of Liberty will safely fly past Earth on Sunday crossing our planet’s natural orbit.

The 249-foot wide asteroid named 2020 JY is currently traveling through our solar system at about 26,000 mph and has a large orbit that extends beyond Jupiter.

CNEOS reports the object will pass on May 16 at 11:03 a.m. EDT at a distance of 1.5 million miles from Earth’s center.
