Like a scene out of the 2020 film Sci-fi/thriller Songbird, Israel will require residents who wish to reenter society to have a COVID-19 ‘Geen Pass’ when lockdowns lift in the coming weeks.
But cybersecurity expert Ran Bar-Zik warned in a Facebook post on Tuesday the pass can easily be forged.
The software engineer and journalist explained in his post that the pass uses a QR code that is made up of the basic information on the pass. That info nation and QR code are simple to recreate.
In fact, the passes are being recreated on the black market by the tens of thousands, according to Bar-Zik.
“Whoever scans the fake ID will see in his app the same details about the certificate and also another ID if required,” he explained in his post. “A holiday for every forger. And already there are tens of thousands faking.”
As a result, strict fines will be imposed on anyone caught with a forged ‘Green Pass,’ according to news out of the region. Times of Israel reports: “Health Minister Yuli Edelstein has warned that anyone caught with a false vaccination pass could be fined NIS 5,000 ($1,500).”
