U.S. bird flu outbreak: Foster Farms quarantined, Canadian infected

Officials: ‘Every bird at farm must be destroyed’

By Shepard Ambellas

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. (INTELLIHUB) — Foster Farms notified U.S. authorities who since quarantined the California turkey farm after finding a highly vigilant strain of the H5N8 bird flu to be present which has already killed a high number of birds in recent days.

Subsequently all birds at the farm will undergo a mass culling by officials in an attempt to save the general public and consumers from contracting the nasty viral strain.

Although the USDA stated that the outbreak won’t pose any risk to the general public, one can never be certain. Further monitoring and testing will take place over the coming days, weeks, in the vicinity.

Reuters reports:

Until now, neither virus has been found in U.S. commercial poultry, and no human cases with these viruses have been detected in the United States, Canada or internationally.

The discovery of bird flu on a commercial farm will undoubtedly cause more trade disruptions for the United States, said Rabobank analyst Don Close.

“That is scary,” he said during a panel discussion at a commodity conference in Miami

Several weeks ago China enacted a ban on all U.S. poultry products after a similar discovery of the virus.

Additionally the deadly H7N9 avian flu strain was just detected in a human from Canada after visiting China.

“The individual is a resident of British Columbia and was not symptomatic during travel and only became sick after arrival in Canada. The individual did not require hospitalization and is currently recovering from their illness, in self-isolation,” the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement.

The B.C. resident returned to Canada on Jan. 12 from China and began feeling ill on Jan. 14., CBC News reported.

It makes you wonder what else they aren’t telling us.

Moreover, if the outbreak spreads it could further crash the U.S. economy.
