LONDON (INTELLIHUB) — The new internet censorship mechanism in the UK has been blocking out large numbers of totally harmless sites, and even websites that are connected to the censorship mechanism itself.  In recent months a very controversial “porn filter” has been implemented by the UK government, and is now fully operational on all ISP’s within the country.

As expected, a lot more than porn has been filtered out by this new censorship tool, large portions of the internet have been randomly blocked because the algorithm used in this filter is highly inaccurate. In the few weeks since this new system has been implemented, people have noticed that LGBT and sex education websites are getting blocked as a result of the ineffective algorithm that is being used.

Also it is important to mention that the nature of the internet makes it nearly impossible to develop a targeted algorithm that will work perfectly, even the great firewall of China has many holes, and covers up a great deal of content purely by accident.

This week it was reported that even some politicians are noticing that the new system they campaigned for is actually blocking their own websites.

According to the Daily Dot, Claire Perry, the Member of Parliament who spearheaded the campaign for content filters in the first place. A vocal proponent of Internet censorship, Perry suggested that the filters to be put in place in the name of child protection, but has now found her own website blocked (along with various official U.K. government pages) because it features words like “sex,” “porn” and “rape” when referring to her support of censoring these exact topics.[1]
