Update: CNN has reported that Russian forces were in the area of the base that was attacked.
At the same time, the Trump White House has gone to great lengths to make it clear that this strike does not change their policy on Syria and does not mean more attacks are coming.
(INTELLIHUB) — With the shocking news that the United States, under orders from President Trump, has attacked an airfield in Syria that the Assad regime may have used to carry out a disputed chemical weapons attack many are left wondering what could soon be on the horizon.
The most pressing question is obviously what the response from the Assad allied Russian government will be, especially when you consider that they warned of negative consequences if the U.S. decided to attack Syria just hours before it actually happened.
As Reuters reported earlier in the day, Russia’s deputy U.N. envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, warned the United States early Thursday that attacking Syria could be a mistake.
“We have to think about negative consequences, negative consequences, and all the responsibility if military action occurred will be on shoulders of those who initiated such doubtful and tragic enterprise,” Safronkov told reporters.
At this point the world is anxiously waiting for an official response from Russia but the recent attack on the Syrian airfield could easily start a much wider confrontation between two of the worlds superpowers.
One thing we do know is that in one swift military strike Trump has completely destroyed the notion that he is working with Russia, a claim that the mainstream media and Democrats have parroted for months.
More importantly, one has to wonder whether or not the chemical attack was actually carried out by the Assad government or if it was staged by some other unknown party in an attempt to force Trump into an attack he may have otherwise not supported. His supposed anti-interventionist policy was an important part of his campaign and this attack doesn’t seem to line up with that promise although observers on the outside may not have all the facts.
Will this attack set the stage for an actual war with Syria and or Russia? Is this the first sign that President Trump is willing to go along with the necon agenda or was he responding to a horrific attack in the best way he was presented?
Clearly a whole slew of pertinent questions remain….
